Analysis on Patient Outcomes in Neurosurgical Units using Nursing Outcomes Classification (NOC)

Abstract
|

|
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine whether a difference in patient outcomes exists in terms of Nursing Outcomes Classification (NOC) after nursing interventions performed to patients admitted at neurosurgical units of Tertiary hospital in Korea.
Method: After providing 2 hour’s lecture to the senior nursing students on how to apply NOC to the patients whom they were taking care of during their clinical practicum, each student was required to complete a case study report using NOC to assess and evaluate patient condition before and after nursing interventions. Data regarding what kinds of NOC used and how much patient outcomes were improved/ or deteriorated were extracted from 62 case reports. Data were analyzed by frequency and paired t-test by medical diagnoses.
Results: After nursing interventions, NOC outcomes scores were increased significantly in the all patient groups.
Conclusion: The finding clearly suggests that nursing interventions make difference in patient outcomes and make contribution to the patient health achieved. To more effective use of NOC in patient care settings, however, nursing information system should be developed and includes standardized nursing languages such as NANDA, and Nursing Interventions Classification (NIC) in its system.
